Interupting the Client

Interupt the Client

"Client problems are what I refer to as 'stuck states' where the individual is literally stuck in an ongoing process of repeating the same thoughts, emotions and behaviours. This often manifests in sessions as they frequently exhibit the need 'to explain the problem' This technique of 'interrupting the client' ensures that they are provoked into new and different behaviours. The practitioner may deliberately ask a succession of questions, not allowing the client to fully respond to any specific question. The practitioner uses the provocative element in this strategy to great effect, effectively changing the previous internal representations. This can be done conversationally by treating the client like an old friend and teasing them with a series of suggestions. Examples of 'stuck states' include phobias, jealousy, anger issues, OCD, addictions, food issues among others"
